About
Coiled basketry is a slow and meditative craft that can be traced back through millennia. This workshop blends ancient techniques with contemporary use of natural and man-made materials where participants can choose to make functional or nonfunctional baskets to develop for art projects or home décor.
You will learn at least three stitching techniques that are easy to apply to other projects. The only thing you need is a little imagination and a willingness to experiment with new materials.
By the end of both days you will have learned a new skill and different ways to see how natural materials in your local environment can be sustainably harvested and used.
This class will suit beginner students or experienced makers who have a reasonable amount of manual dexterity and are looking to expand their repertoire by making sculptural baskets that can be used for functional or decorative purposes. The aim is to experiment with different techniques and materials.
Prior knowledge of stitching or sewing techniques is an advantage. However, the instructor will demonstrate the techniques as well as show how to avoid repetitive strain injuries.
