About

This is a beginning class in the metalsmithing techniques of chasing and repoussé. Repoussé refers to forming sheet metal from the back creating raised areas to work from the front. Chasing refers to texturing, detailing and refining the front of the piece.  Students will learn to use all the tools involved including chasing tools and chaser’s pitch, a pine resin based material, to support the metal while working. These techniques open up a world of possibilities in adding exciting form and strength to sheet metal, while also creating unique textures and details.

Students will focus on making samples.

Students please bring:

  1. 3 tubes of lip balm (ChapStick is best, any lip balm with very few ingredients okay).
  2. Stainless steel thrift store soup spoon (the type you would use for a bowl).
  3. One pair of very cheap long needle nose pliers (Thrift store or hardware store) – they will get ruined for fine jewelry work.

Details:

  • This is a beginning level class. Intermediate level welcome also.
  • $40 materials fee is included in the class tuition. This will include 6 pieces of 22 gauge copper sheet 3 x 3.
  • Extra copper will be available for purchase. Please bring cash or check made out to BARN.
  • Please bring a bag lunch. BARN has a refrigerator and a microwave, located on the lower level.
