About

*Canceled due to Covid-19 closure of BARN. Registrants notified. 4/7/20 SK

* This class has prerequisites. Please see below.

In this culminating segment of  BARN's Beginning Woodworking series, you will build a small, Shaker-style table suitable as a lamp stand or night stand that incorporates some of your own design elements.

This class is designed for students who know the basics of using hand and power tools but  want to develop those skills more and learn to take a project through all of the steps from initial idea through finished project. This class includes:

  • developing a design, including details that you select, such as width, depth, height and whether to taper the legs.
  • creating a cut list.
  • fabricating parts.
  • assembling and gluing.

Details:

  • * Open to students 14+ years old who have taken Beginning Woodworking: Hand Tools and Beginning Woodworking: Power Tools, or who have the instructor's permission. If you want to arrange that, please email using this form.
  • * You also need to have completed our free one-hour Orientation to the Woodshop class plus Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1 and Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2. If you are missing any of these classes, please register for them before you sign up for this class.
  • The seven 3-hour class sessions probably will not be enough for you to finish your project. Plan on doing additional work during the Woodworking Studio's 30 hours a week of Open Studio time so that you complete your table by the end of the class. Open studio time is always free for BARN members. Non-members can also use Open Studio to work on class projects without an additional fee.
  • Tuition assistance is available.  Click here to apply.
  • Wear close-toe shoes, avoid loose clothing or dangling jewelry, and tie back long hair.
Instructor: Ted Newman. Ted studied woodworking and assisted in classes at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. He is active in BARN's woodworker group and volunteers as a safety monitor.
