About

Class postponed until P3. Registrants were notified on 7/6.~tt

Learn how to use hand tools skillfully in this three-week component of BARN's Beginning Woodworking series.

You will build a two-compartment tote, handy for storing or carrying silverware, garden tools or other items. The project was specifically designed to give you experience with the most common hand tools. You will learn to use:

  • measuring and marking tools
  • crosscut and rip cut hand saws
  • hand planes
  • chisels
  • hand drill (bit and brace)
  • coping saw

Details:

  • Beginners are welcome.
  • Tuition assistance is available. Click here to apply.

  • Depending on your pace, you may need to work on your tote during Open Studio time in order to complete it by the end of the class. To participate in these sessions, you must first take our free, one-hour Orientation to the Woodshop class. See dates on the calendar. (Use of the shop during these times is always free for members. Non-members can also participate at no charge for the duration of this class.)
  • If you want to take our full Beginning Woodworking series, you can take this class or Beginning Woodworking: Power Tools in either order. Both classes are recommendedd for students who want to take Beginning Woodworking: Design & Build a Table.
  • This class includes a half-hour lunch break. Please bring a sack lunch  because there won't be enough time to go out. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave in the kitchenette on the lower level.
Instructors: Amy Beckett & Marvin Crosland.

Amy has been woodworking for more than 20 years, with a strong focus on hand tool use. She has studied at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center,  Northwest School of Woodworking, and Port Townsend School of Woodworking. Her portfolio includes custom and commissioned furniture as well as decor pieces that combine hardwoods with metal, leather, and fiber.

Marvin is a retired Broadway and Touring Stagehand. Since moving to Poulsbo and joining the BARN, he is continuing the quest to transit from a Theatrical Carpenter into a Woodworker.
