About

Learn the fundamentals of working with hand and power tools and go home with an elegant bench in this four-day intensive class. Beginners are welcome, but before the first session you need to have taken BARN's Woodshop Tool Safety 1 class or have previous woodworking experience approved by the instructor (details below).

This class walks you through the critical steps of making a well-crafted project:
  • You will learn the basic principles about designing projects built of wood, and then design your bench.
  • You will learn to properly square and machine the parts, using power tools including the jointer, planer and table saw.
  • Working with chisels, hand planes and hand saws, you will cut and fit the joints: dovetails and wedged tenons with through mortises. You will learn to use water stones to sharpen the chisels and plane blades.
  • There will not be time in the class for finishing, but you will learn options that you can complete on your own.

Details:

  • If you have not already taken our Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1 class and the classes listed on the calendar are full, please email using this form and we will open a spot for you. Use the same form to contact the instructor for a review of your skills other than by taking this class.
  • A materials fee of $21 to cover wood (poplar) and shop materials will be added to the class fee when you register and pay.
  • There will be a dinner break of approximately an hour each evening. You will be free to leave, but we suggest bringing food and eating in the Commons at BARN. A refrigerator, microwave, plates and utensils are available for your use.

Instructor: Ted Newman studied woodworking and assisted in classes at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. He is active in BARN's woodworker group and volunteers as a safety monitor.
