About
This BETA Class is part 1 of a 2 part class to (part #1) demonstrate the capabilities of the combined Welding and Sheet Metal shops and stimulate participants and (part #2) help participants to create projects or variants shown in part #1 or create ideas of their own.
The class is designed to expand the perceived range of things that can be done and created in the combined shops.
The BETA class introduces Bob Mathisrud as a teacher at BARN. He has been a mainstay in Metal Fabrication for some time.
THE BETA CLASS WELCOMES THE PARTICIPATION OF 2-3 BOARD MEMBERS. (RSVP)
THE FOLLOWING IS A DISCUSSION DRAFT TEXT FOR THE EVENTUAL CLASS POSTING:
Welding, Bending, Cutting and Scrollwork – ART AND PRACTICALITY
This is a two part class that demonstrates the capabilities of the combined Welding and Sheet Metal shops, stimulates ideas about metal creativity, and provides the techniques and assistance for participants to create artistic and/or practical metal pieces. The emphasis is on curved metal.
Part One (Date and time) (hopefully NO COST) (perhaps 6 people for mostly demos) is an introduction to the combined capabilities of the two shops
Part Two (Dates and times) (BARN cost model + materials) (3 participants) provides the opportunity for participants to create projects or variants shown in part #1 or create ideas of their own using available materials and techniques. The shop class offers an integrated class using the combined tools of the welding and sheet metal studios to form curved projects in steel. This class uses the scroll bender or roller bender to fabricate mild steel strips for use in gates, trellises, plant stands, hooks. Use the sheet metal roller to curve sheet steel (<16 gauge). Cut designs with the plasma cutter. Weld the pieces together.
Some of the techniques and potential projects/ ideas demonstrated include:
- · TECHNIQUES
- · circular/curved bending
- · spot welding,
- · plasma cutting,
- · hot bending,
- · sheet cutting,
- · scroll work,
- · MIG welding
- · tubing bending
- · IDEAS
- · pie or cake pan,
- · plant or bird feeder hanger,
- · wall sconce,
- · kinetic wind art,
- · tomato cage,
- · hot bent hook,
- · wind chimes,
- · tin man hat
This class sequence will prepare you for use in our open studios and/or encourage you to seek more improved skills.
Previous welding experience is NOT a prerequisite for scroll work or for basic tack welds.
Instructor: Bob Mathisrud has 20+ years’ experience as a stationary operating engineer for national recognized bakeries.
