About

Wednesday, October 12 from 6 to 9 pm

No materials fee but students supply wood.

Have wood ducks on your property and want to entice them to nest? Or hear owls and wonder if you can provide a suitable home? In this class, you will build a birdhouse that suits the needs of a specific kind of bird that you choose.

We will use plans developed by the Washington Department of Fish and Game and Russell Link, a wildlife biologist for the department who wrote “Landscaping for Wildlife in the Pacific Northwest.” The size and shape of the house, the hole shape and size, and other details make all the difference in whether a birdhouse will actually be used, and by what kind of bird. (The illustration shows the department’s plan for a wood duck house, which requires an oval hole 3 inches high and 4 inches wide.)

Through emails, students who register for this class will select a bird species and then receive a suitable plan with a materials list. Students will be responsible for purchasing the necessary wood and bringing it to the class. All other materials, such as fasteners, will be supplied. There is no added materials fee.

This class is open to beginners 14 years and older. It is a perfect followup to BARN’s introductory classes on stationary power tools.

Instructors: This class will be team-taught by two BARN members, Tom Wilson and Jeanne Huber. Tom is a retired high school shop teacher. Jeanne worked briefly as a carpenter.
