About

Learn how to apply ink to hand-carved blocks from India and print with them. You'll learn about the ink and how to set up a printing surface, practicing first on scraps of fabric and paper. Different inks will be discussed and you'll learn how to clean the blocks after they're used. All supplies and materials will be discussed as well as different options for buying inks and supplies. And we'll discuss ideas for printing projects.

After learning the techniques, you'll design and print two tea towels. There will be many printing blocks to choose from and your instructor will share some of her vintage blocks. You'll be able to pick blocks associated with a theme like fish, or plants, or animals. Come with any ideas you have (there are many examples on the internet) and leave with the knowledge of how to do this at home on paper or fabric.

Instructor
Cathy Moeller

Cathy Moeller is a block printing artist and teacher who creates unique and beautiful prints on fabric and paper using wooden blocks from India. She discovered her passion for block printing years ago as a child. She became very interested in using printing block with clay. She bought her first wooden blocks from an Indian wood carver. She taught herself how to print on clay, fabric, paper and soon developed her own style and technique. Cathy loves to create texture and the blocks gave her the perfect tool to experiment with. She enjoys experimenting with different colors, inks, and materials to create new things. She was raised in Southern California near the beach, where her mother, an artist, exposed her to arts and crafts from an early age. She learned pottery sewing, batik and dyeing fabric as a child, and still likes to work with clay, fiber and paper. Cathy hopes to one day go to India and meet her wood carver and take some printing classes.
