About

Learn how to work with decorative papers, binder’s board, and folded pages to create a simple hand-bound book. You'll learn fundamental bookbinding skills including working with paper grain, scoring and folding, creating a hard cover and liner with cold mount adhesive, and sewing the pages into the cover with a simple pamphlet stitch. You'll have a completed book at the end of the class.

  • Experience level: Beginner. No binding experience is needed.
  • This is a great class if you’ve never made a book before or you want a refresher on the basics. Techniques learned in this class will be applicable to more advanced book classes.

Details

A $20 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you will need. 

Project

You'll complete a 16-page, pamphlet-bound, blank book with a decorative, paper-wrapped hard cover.

Class Policies

Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Instructor
Ann Lovett

Ann holds a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, in Philadelphia and a Master of Fine Arts in poetry from Warren Wilson College in North Carolina. Her visual art practice includes artists books, printmaking, and photography, and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She has been the recipient of New York Council on the Arts and New York Foundation for the Arts grants, numerous artist residencies, and is represented in museum and individual collections. She taught photography at State University of New York in New Paltz, for 33 years and moved to the Puget Sound area recently from Ashland, Ore., where she also was a volunteer instructor with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. In the Print & Book Studio, Ann can certify people to use the Takach etching presses.
