About
Join woodworker and kayaker Charles Sharpe in making your own Greenland-style kayak paddle, custom-sized to fit you and your boat. Greenland-style paddles are long and narrow. There is less strain on the shoulders than with a Euro paddle, and the ergonomic shaft allows a more relaxed grip, which reduces hand strain. The blade is symmetrical.
At the first session, you will glue up a blank for your paddle from strips of western red cedar, Alaskan yellow cedar, and Peruvian walnut, using MAS marine-grade epoxy. Each paddle will have a walnut strip down the center for added strength. The cedar strips will keeps your paddle lightweight, and the contrasting colors of the two types of cedar will add a design element.
At the second session, you will rough out the shape on a bandsaw. The final two sessions will be devoted to shaping your paddle, using hand tools.
