About

This weekly sketching group includes visual prompts and an opportunity to ask questions as you practice. Facilitated by a veteran BARN instructor.

In a special collaboration with the Battle Point Observatory, a volunteer will be available to give participants access to the observatory rooftop for a new perspective (requires the ability to climb stairs; no
shade). Alternatively, you can follow one of the walking paths to explore other areas within the park (plenty of trees for shade).

Please note that, as a “meet-up”, this is not an instructor-led class. This is a peer group for practicing and learning together in a supportive environment.

Details

  • Bring your drawing materials. Watercolor artists are welcome!
  • Bring a water bottle and sun/rain protection.
  • We recommend that you bring a chair.
  • Sessions may be cancelled in the event of severe weather.

Instructor
Michael Gunderson

Michael comes to BARN with 50 years' experience teaching art. He started teaching painting and drawing in Southern California in the early '70s and his last public school position was as lead teacher and administrator in charge of creating a small public high school in central California. After teaching multiple elective subjects, he always had his love of drawing and painting as his security blanket. Adventures led him to Canada and San Diego where he was active in drawing groups and watercolor societies. His move to Bainbridge introduced him to BARN where he served in a leadership role in the Woodworking Studio. Four years ago, the sketchbook called and he formed regular drop-in drawing sessions in BARN's Commons. This interest has, in turn, led to his active participation in BARN’s Drawing & Painting Studio. His main interest remains with the refinement of his drawing skills, and the drawing skills of others.

Instructor
Carla Mackey

Although she's currently the Drawing & Painting Studio lead and hosts the weekly watercolor meetup, she says she's not an expert watercolorist but rather an enthusiastic learner and experimenter. Carla is an avid traveler (with lots of travel journals), hiker (yep, more journals), and student of all things Italian (where the colors, culture, and history inspire her interest in watercolor). Her primary goal for the weekly watercolor meetup is to create a community of people who love watercolor; want to learn and practice in a safe, non-competitive space; and maybe relax and laugh along the way.

Instructor
Sandra Moen

Following a career working in the analytical realm, Sandra has been delightedly exploring her more artistic side since retiring in May 2025. She is currently actively involved in drawing, watercolor, and tapestry weaving through BARN, and is excited to lead the new Community Journaling Club where she hopes to combine her interest in drawing with ideas for writing about life experiences, the nature that surrounds us, past and future travels, and maybe even some fiction down the road.
