About

Learn and practice crochet amigurumi techniques while making a stuffed snowman. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures. Some of the techniques you'll learn include:

  • Making a "magic circle" to start a project in the round
  • Working spiral single crochet in the round
  • Increasing and decreasing with single crochet
  • Pom-pom creation (if the beanie is chosen for the hat)

The body of the snowman is worked entirely in single crochet from the bottom up. The snowman will be decorated with a scarf and hat (your choice of a beanie or top hat) created with a variety of stitches including back loop only and front loop only crochet.

Details

Skill level: Advanced beginner. While the stitches aren't particularly difficult, there are a lot of details in completing this project.

Details

  • An $8 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers a materials kit that includes safety eyes and buttons, orange yarn for the nose, and poly fill and poly pellets to stuff and weight the snowman.
  • You need to download and bring a copy of the Snowman Ornament pattern by Toni Davenport. It's available for $3 on Ravelry.
  • You need to bring:
    • White/ivory yarn for the body. The pattern recommends worsted weight (size 4/medium) acrylic yarn. Feel free to use what you have as long as it's the right weight.
    • Additional yarn for the scarf and hat. You'll need two solid colors for the beanie option, or black and one other color for the top hat option.
    • A 5.0 or 5.5 mm crochet hook
    • A large tapestry needle

Project

An amigurumi snowman about 8" tall that can be hung or stood up with other holiday decorations.

Prerequisites

Crochet 101 or other experience with the basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow a written crochet pattern.

Class Policies

Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Instructor
Robyn Weimer

Robyn learned to crochet from her grandmother in high school, along with many other needle arts including macrame, needlepoint, crewel, and cross stitch. She did many crochet projects over several years, until her children and career squeezed out the time to continue. After retiring in 2019, she resumed crochet and other needle arts and gratefully found that the muscle memory came back quickly. After moving back to the Pacific Northwest in 2021, she joined BARN and now participates in the Fiber Arts, Woodworking, and Tech Lab studios. She’s interested in learning new skills and finding opportunities for cross-studio collaboration.
