In this short (3-hour) class students will learn how-to carve and prepare the cuttlefish bone for direct metal casting. 

This method of "Direct Casting" is one of the oldest, easiest, and most affordable casting techniques.

Cuttlefish bone has a natural wood grain-like texture that can provide a design element on the surface of your metal.

Students will learn torch safety in order to heat and pour molten metal safely. Carving a design into the Cuttlefish bone, adding a sprue, and cutting off the sprue after casting are the focus of this class. Filing and finishing the cast metal element will also be covered. 

Students can make a pendant or other small design object, which can be part of another jewelry piece.

• This is a beginning all levels class. 
• Casting and carving experience is not required but will give you an advantage in this class.
• $20 materials fee is included in the price of class.

Instructor Bio: Chris Stanley is an artist, model maker, jeweler, set designer and inventor. Chris has a wealth of information on materials and how things are made. He has worked as a model maker, jeweler, set designer and educator. He teaches classes here at BARN in a variety of studios.
