About
This class has been canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience.
This is the introductory course to learn to fly first-person view (FPV) drones. Flying a FPV drone uses FPV high-definition goggles to provide a truly immersive experience similar to virtual reality (VR). Students will be introduced to the steps needed to learn to fly a FPV drone using a flight simulator. Note that training on a simulator is a prerequisite for being able to fly a first-person drone without crashing it!
Students can prepare for this course by browsing the information at https://oscarliang.com/fpv-drone-guide/#what-is-fpv-flying. Especially useful is to read chapter 4 "Get a Taste of Flying in a Simulator". If possible, pick a simulator with a compatible controller and get some early practice in before the start of the course (see details about controller below).
Following the simulator training, you will be eligible to take our Build an FPV Drone class series starting with Drones 102. If you plan to build a drone, you will need to practice taking off, landing and flying with a simulator to reduce the risk of crashing your newly built drone prior to trying to fly it.
In this class, you will also learn how to create a "model" in a controller for flying a drone in a simulator. This will be the same process used to build a “model” in your controller for an
actual drone.
Required Prior to Class:
- A Laptop capable of running a simulator, i.e., reasonable speed. If you do not have a machine, there are three desktops that can be used in ETA studio.
- You will be provided a controller to use in class to get familiar with flying a drone in a simulator. You will be given a Radiomaster TX16S radio controller. This same controller can be used to train on the flight simulator as well as flying an actual crone. This controller is outstanding and considered to be a universal standard for flying all types of craft. If you prefer to purchase your own Radiomaster TX16S controller, you can find purchase it here class: https://shop.addictiverc.com/products/radio-master-tx16s-mark-ii-radio-controller-m2 - but you will be provided a controller to use in class as part of the registration for this course.
- If you are planning on taking the Drones 102, you need to order the Radiomaster TX16S controller as well as the entire kit for it to arrive before the end of July. Please use this FPV kit link and get your orders in as soon as possible.
- Liftoff Flight Simulator software: https://www.liftoff-game.com/liftoff-fpv-drone-racing - note it is also available on STEAM. Please purchase prior to the class and install it on your laptop.
- Join the BARN ETA-DRONE Slack channel. It is an important source of communication for the class and post class support. You will be sent an invitation to join upon signup of the class or you can simply join if you are already on Slack.
