Create two stunning custom bowls with dramatic results using a drop out mold with elevated kiln posts. We offer cold working techniques for a clean finish to your bowls.
In session 1, we will discuss design elements and provide some pointers on glass choice and how it effects the drop out process using samples we will provide. Learn how to manipulate the drop out process by making use of the kiln’s controller.
Choose a 5” pre-made blank (already fused) and we will guide you through preparations with thin fire paper, fiber paper, stacking the posts for the drop, and load the kiln for firing with a “generalized” firing schedule.
For the second bowl, choose glass and any additional design elements, cut 2 -8” circles for medium sized drop out mold, assemble pieces for a full fuse. Load kiln and fuse.
Session 2:
Find your finished 5” drop out and we will observe the differences in each bowl based on glass color, etc.
Prepare the fused 8” blanks for drop out as we did with the 5” blanks. We will demonstrate sharing posts and keeping posts clear of the drop.
Discuss the kiln controller and how to manipulate the schedule to get desired results.
Begin discussion on coldworking of drop outs. Students whose drop outs completed in the first firing can begin coldworking those pieces.
Session 3:
Clean up medium drop outs, observe results and discuss final firing schedule.
The balance of class is devoted to coldworking and discussion of outcomes and expectations.

Instructor Bios
Nancy Adams: "I have loved everything glass since I was a young child. During the 70’s I dabbled in stained glass. I discovered playing with fused glass at Mesolini Glass and became intrigued with techniques and processes for manipulating the glass. Retirement in 2017 opened the door for the opportunity to pursue glass experimentation, and to share with others what I have learned."
Teri Seidler: "My passion since early adulthood was glass, which was quickly laid to rest as a mother and a budding horticulturist with a nursery. However, 35 glorious years later, I was introduced to fused glass and fell in love with the process, beautiful selections of glass and the endless projects that one can do at home. Coming into my 7th year now, there is an explosion of new glass, materials and information on glass fusing. The sky is the limit. I love being in a class with other enthusiasts to exchange ideas and the comradery that comes naturally from just being at BARN."
