About
Come to this special edition of ETA Tech Talks to hear about design aspects of an energy efficient supercomputer center at Los Alamos National Laboratory which usually has one of the top five supercomputers in the world. The newest, most powerful supercomputer can require 40 MW of electricity, which is about the same as all of Bainbridge Island.
After doing lots of computing, all that power turns into heat, which has to be removed from the supercomputer. The most energy efficient way to remove that heat from the supercomputer is with warm water that runs next to the processors. That heat is then carried outside, where it is removed with either evaporative cooling towers, or adiabatic dry coolers, which use less water.
Speaker Bio: Mike Strevell is Division Leader of the Project Management Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was a Lt. Colonel in the USAF where he earned a PhD in high performance processor design, followed by an assignment as a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the Air Force Academy. After retiring from the Air Force, Mike moved to Motorola where he managed a micro-processor development team for the first Motorola flip phone, and later became the Director of Project Management for Motorola Semiconductor. Mike then moved to Los Alamos National Laboratory where he has been managing advanced technology projects for the past 13 years. His current work is in supercomputer facility design.
Free to All, Public Warmly Welcome Tech Talks are free and open to the public. Registration is requested but not required. It's just so we can do a better job of setting up. All ages but under 12 with an accompanying adult.
