About

Now that you have learned the basics of linocut printmaking and learned some new techniques in the intermediate class, it's time to have some FUN!

We will review some of the previous techniques and explore some new paths. You can choose which of these listed techniques you'd like to explore.

These techniques will be reviewed:

  • Jigsaw printmaking: Using one linoleum block to create multi-color prints by cutting the block into sections, inking each section individually, and then piecing them back together to run through the press.
  • Multiblock printmaking: Using more than one linoleum block to create multi-layer prints.
  • Registration techniques: Learn how to make sure your blocks and paper line up perfectly! We will talk about several techniques and use Ternes-Burton pins for registration.
  • Selective inking techniques: Inking different colors on one block, and Rainbow rolls and gradients

Additional techniques to be explored:

  • Printing on other substrates: T-shirts and tea towels (bring a pre-washed T-shirt, tea towels will be provided); printing on different papers (generously provided by St. Cuthberts Mill and Legion Paper!); and chine collé.

Details

  • All materials will be provided except T-shirts.
  • Bring some simple designs that you would like to use for this class. The blocks will be 8"x10," so design to fit that size or smaller. Search some examples on Google keywords “Jigsaw Linocut” and “relief printing.”

Project

  • We will be carving on unmounted ‘Battleship Gray Linoleum’ printing blocks (and some easy-cut).
  • We will be printing on Somerset Satin paper with Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash inks (and some other papers for variety).
  • We will be printing with two types of fabric ink.
  • We will be printing on T-shirts and tea towels and different papers.
