About

Our Northwest winters can wreak havoc on wooden fence posts. But when the posts have decorative metal caps, the rain runs off and the wood doesn’t rot. In this class, you'll learn to design and make post toppers suitable for square, rectangular or round posts. The caps can be pointed or not, depending on your bird-watching desires. If you want to make numerous caps, you will be able to follow through during the metal shop’s open studio times.

The additional materials cost, payable at the class, is $5 for two caps made from 26 gauge galvanized steel or $12 for two made from 12 ounce copper. The galvanized steel caps can be primed and painted to resemble copper. Students can choose a style that fits a 4-by-4 inch square post or a 5-inch round post.

The Sheet Metal Studio will be open Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 6 to 8 pm for open studio time to finish any class projects. Please check the Metal Arts calendar and register for Open Studio so we know you are coming.

No prior sheet metal experience is required, although you need to have taken the two-hour Sheet Metal Safety class, offered twice a month on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 pm.

Instructor: Jack Archer spent a career in sheet metal work and now heads BARN’s sheet metal programs. Contact Jack with any questions:  jackswines@gmail.com
