About

Sawing and finishing skills are fundamental to almost all jewelry-making techniques. This focused open studio is an opportunity for you to practice these skills. The studio will provide patterns you can use to create earrings, pendants, and ornaments. You can also bring your own patterns.

Details

  • A $13 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, will cover enough copper and brass to create several pendants, earrings, or ornaments.
  • You will be able to purchase additional materials. A limited amount of sterling silver is available for purchase. A two-inch by two-inch piece of 20-gauge sterling silver is approximately $30. Bring cash or check.
  • Bring your own towels.

Prerequisites

You must have a skills card that indicates you have been checked off for the basic skills of sawing, drilling, filing, and sanding.  A great class to achieve these if you do not have them already is Introduction to Jewelry: Skills Class.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • Wear closed-toed shoes and natural-fiber clothing (cotton, linen, or wool). Do not wear synthetics such as polyester.
  • Tie or clip long hair back
  • Do not wear any dangling jewelry, including necklaces and bracelets.
  • Do not wear loose clothing that can get caught in tools or equipment.

Instructor
Karen Olch

Karen was born and raised in Pasadena, Calif., and graduated from the Los Angeles County College of Nursing. She earned her bachelor's degree from Chapman College and was an operating room nurse and manager at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles until she married Christopher Olch, a Navy medical officer, in 1985. They lived in Maryland, California, Connecticut, and Japan before being transferred to the Pacific Northwest. They settled in Kitsap County in 1997 and on Bainbridge Island in 2017. Their adult son, Matthew, is a video game animator in the Seattle area. Karen has always loved to look at and collect jewelry, so when she took her first class in BARN's Jewelry Studio, she was hooked. She understands the importance of organization and working together to provide an atmosphere of safety, judicious use of resources, and enjoyment of the creative processes in crafting jewelry.
