About

BARN member:  $85
Non-member:  $97

Materials fee: $10

Saturday, October 17 from 10 am to 4 pm

A fun, spontaneous, low-tech approach to printmaking that combines simple techniques for complex results.

Through demos and hands-on work, we will begin with black ink on a sheet of acrylic, creating an image by removing ink (subtractive) to expose the white of the paper. This simple approach can yield magical, glowing images in the best of black & white traditions. After lunch we will launch into color. Using additive and subtractive techniques, we will print translucent layers of process/primary colored inks to produce a beautiful array of visual effects. The inks are oil-based for elasticity and body. Clean-up involves vegetable oil and baby wipes.

Instructor: Leigh Knowles received her BFA with an emphasis in Printmaking in 1981 from the University of Southern California. Four months later, she moved to Bainbridge Island to start a new life as an artist and teacher in the beauty of the NW. Eventually, she pursued an MFA in Printmaking & Drawing, graduating from Arizona State University in 1991. Leigh accepted a position at Bradley University in Peoria, IL as the Director of Cradle Oak Press, a collaborative print research facility. She taught Printmaking and Drawing to undergraduates and at the graduate level until 1998 when she returned to the Pacific NW, settling in Poulsbo WA. Since 1981, Leigh has participated in ninety-five solo and juried group exhibitions (currently The Printmakers Hand III at Northwind Gallery in Port Townsend). Her work can be found in numerous private and public collections and in various galleries including Bainbridge Arts & Crafts.
