About

By stacking layers of transparent sheet glass and fusing them in the kiln, images can achieve a unique sense of depth. In this workshop, we will examine methods for hand painting and drawing on glass with the use of glass powder and enamel. We will consider both abstract, and representational approaches; and formal drawing skills are not necessary.

Students should consider what imagery they would like to work on prior to the start of class. The instructor will send out an email to enrolled students explaining what they will be working on and how they can prepare.

Session 1: A slideshow about the process and a hands on demonstration for painting with enamel paints and drawing with glass powder will be presented. The best way to realize your images through a combination of powder drawing and enamel painting will be covered. We will break down each student’s image into dimensional layers, and spend the remainder of class time working.

Students are welcome to stay and work for as long as they like after class. The instructor will be in the studio all evening to answer questions, and then will load everyone’s projects into the kiln.

Session 2: Will begin with unloading the kiln and discussing the results of the first firing. The instructor will give a lecture about firing schedules and common kiln practices such as bubble control. How to properly set up a stacked full fuse in the kiln will be demonstrated, and students will set up their projects for the final firing. Students may also spend time creating additional pieces and samples that will not be a part of their layered project.

Students may come pick up their fully fused work the following day.

Handouts will also be available to take home.
