Join us for a very special opportunity to watch as master basket weaver Ed Carriere demonstrates hand splitting cedar limb and cedar root for basket shaping and weaving. He will share some of the projects he's been working on, and leave plenty of time for questions.  

An Elder of the Suquamish Tribe, Ed has been the subject of many films, books, and articles. In addition to being a master basket weaver, he is a canoe builder and skipper, a totem pole restorer, and a cultural teacher. Ed is a Creative Resident at Bloedel Reserve in March 2021.

Ed first learned to weave baskets from his great grandmother, Julia Jacob of the Suquamish Tribe, when he was just 15 years old. After his grandmother passed away in 1960, and after some years away from weaving, he returned to it in 1969 and has been weaving ever since. He has learned to make a wide variety of artifacts including the open weave burden basket, straight and crossed warp clam gathering baskets, clothing, and hats. His materials are the bark, limbs, and roots of the western red cedar, beargrass, sweetgrass, wild cherry bark, cattail and horse tail root.

Many who have studied with Ed have gone on to become master weavers and cultural educators in their own communities.

Bloedel Reserve is a 150-acre public garden on Bainbridge Island focused on horticulture, stewardship, creativity, and well-being.  Bloedel's Creative Residency program welcomes artists for three-week stays to develop work in their discipline connecting creativity & the environment.  BARN is delighted to partner with Bloedel Reserve to bring you this creative learning opportunity.
