About
If you're just starting out using tools and don't know where to begin with home repairs, BARN's Home Repair series of classes is for you.
This session will help you select a drill for your home tool kit. Your drill will likely be the first or second tool you grab whenever you begin a home repair project, so you want to be sure you have a drill that feels comfortable in your hands. We will show you how to use a drill, how to adjust it, and how to tighten a keyless chuck. You will learn about different types of drill bits (spade, twist, step and brad point) and which work best on specific projects in wood or metal. You will learn how to select the right drill bit size for fasteners, how to drill a straight hole, and how to drill to the right depth. We will also discuss the advantages of using an impact driver vs. a drill. We will have lots of different types of drills and impact drivers so you can judge how they feel in your hand. You will learn the advantages and disadvantages of having a corded or a cordless drill.

Instructor: Denise Baker-Kircher put herself through college by running her own remodeling business in Chicago in the 1970s. While working a full-time job, she worked with Seattle Habitat for Humanity for several years as part of the volunteer crew, then on the electrical team, and finally as head of the speaker’s bureau. Denise has gutted, remodeled, completely rewired, insulated, drywalled and finished two of her previous homes in the Seattle area. She is currently a BARN woodshop monitor and is happily designing and building new cabinetry for the home she shares with her husband, Dave, on Bainbridge Island.
