Things to know before scheduling your jewelry studio assessment:
For BARN Guests and Members, successful completion of this hour long session will be allowed access to the Jewelry Studio for working independently on projects of your choosing during monitored Open Studio hours only. Please note that the general open studios times are free to Members and $20 for Guests.
Please bring a sampling of your recently made jewelry to help showcase your skills, photos will not be accepted.
What to expect during your assessment:
- At the start of your assessment you will showcase your recent work.
- You will be shown where things are located in the studio so you can set up for your demo(s).
- You will be asked to verbally explain the steps you are doing as well as demonstrate proper use of the tool/equipment and complete a sample to showcase your understanding of safety and proper use.
- Please be prepared to set up and tear down your work space on all skills you demo.
- If you meet the skills and safety requirements for using the equipment during the assessment, you will receive a Skills Card that indicates that you can use that equipment during Open Studios.
- If it is decided that a refresher class is needed, you will receive a Skills Card and access to Open Studios upon successful completion of the class.
- Once you have a Skills Card, your fob will be activated to give you access to the studio during Open Studios.
Please ensure that you have communicated with the studio which of the following skills you would like to be assessed on during your scheduled assessment:
- Soldering: demonstrate sweat/ joint/ post
- Flex shaft: demonstrate drilling/sanding or polishing
- Rolling Mill: demonstrate rolling a found texture
- Disk cutter/ Dapping: demonstrate cutting some metal and dap
- Buffing Wheels: demonstrate polishing
- Shears: demonstrate cutting metal
- Drill Press: demonstrate drilling
- Hand tools such as disk & shape cutters, dapping blocks & punches: discussion
- Chemical handling: discussion
Speciality
The following list of speciality skills and their accompanying equipment require a separate assessment. Due to the allotted time needed to demonstrate, set up, and tear down all equipment, these skills can not be combined with the items listed above.
- Enameling: demonstrate preparing metal/ enameling/ kiln/ finishing
- Lapidary: demonstrate cut/ cab/ dop/ finish (please bring your own towels for cleaning up; the studio does not provide towels)
- Casting/ Investing/ Wax carving (this requires a 2-3 session assessment with an additional fee): demonstrate carve/ sprue/ weigh/ invest/ cast
- Hydraulic Press: demonstrate set up & use
- Chasing & Repousse / Hammers & Stakes: demonstrate set up & use
- Grinders: demonstrate grinding
- GRS tools: demonstrate set up & use
