About

This class has prerequisites. Please see below.

Build a small, Shaker-style table suitable as a lamp stand or night stand as you learn to take a project through all of the steps from initial idea to finished project.

This class is designed for students who know the basics of using hand and power tools but  want to develop those skills more under the guidance of an experienced instructor. You will start with a basic design and cut list, then fabricate parts, cut joinery, and assemble and glue your table. The instructor will strive to help all students get their project glued up before the end of the class. There will not be enough time to apply finish.

Details:

  • Open to students 14+ years old who have taken Beginning Woodworking: Hand Tools and Beginning Woodworking: Power Tools, or who have the instructor's permission, which you can arrange using this form.
  • You also need to have completed Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1,  Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2 and our free one-hour Orientation to the Woodshop. If you are missing any of these classes, please register for them before you sign up for this class.
  • The seven 3-hour class sessions probably will not be enough for you to finish your project. Plan on doing additional work during the woodshop's 30 hours a week of Open Studio time so that you complete your table by the end of the class. Open studio time is always free for BARN members. Non-members can also use Open Studio to work on class projects without an additional fee.
  • Tuition assistance is available. Click here to apply.
  • BARN is practicing safety measures for the health and well-being of all participants, in accordance with state and CDC guidelines.  BARN safety policies are here.
  • You must wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid loose-fitting clothing and jewelry. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.
Instructor: Ted Newman. Ted studied woodworking and has assisted in classes at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. He is active in BARN's woodworker group and volunteers as a safety monitor.
