About

BARN member: $40 (2 sessions)
Non-member: $50 (2 sessions)

Tuesday & Wednesday/Thursday*, December 8 & 9 from 6p to 8p or December 10 from 7p to 9p

A materials fee to cover project kit costs will be payable directly to the instructor.   Hardware kits range in price from $4-$11.

Learn the basics of spindle woodturning on the lathe and create a holiday gift. Students can choose to make a bottle opener, pizza cutter, ice cream scoop, or bottle stopper.  Students will learn to use the lathe to create a handle suitable for the utensil of their choice from woods such as maple, walnut, oak, cherry or mahogany. The class will include finishing the wood and applying the hardware. The completed project will make a great present.

The basics of spindle turning on a small lathe will be covered in the first session including: the parts of the lathe, how wood is held on the lathe, basic spindle turning tools and their sharpening, and safety.  There are no prerequisites for this introductory class. Students with previous turning experience may be able to progress at a faster pace.

A video for review will be provided prior to class.

*Students will return for the second session in two groups on either December 9 or December 10 to allow each student maximum time using the lathe. Please note the different time for December 10 (7-9p).

Instructor:  Sam Bardelson has been a hobby woodworker for 25 years, mostly making furniture pieces. He took up woodturning 8 years ago, doing mostly spindle turning, and has taken classes from Bonnie Klein. His next big project, put off for several years, is a dining room table and chairs. His wife is patiently waiting.

Sam will be assisted by Jeff Williams.
