The class begins with a safety briefing. There is a brief introduction to welding theory and materials. Each student will go through the set up process for MIG welding on a Miller 215 Welder. There will be approximately an hour of hands-on practice and guidance on technique. At the end of class, students should be able to lay down a weld bead.
This is a hands-on introduction and is the first of a two-part series. The MIG welding class is limited to 4 participants. Small class size creates an intimate learning atmosphere for one-on-one learning. The class is open to anyone interested in exploring the welding process from the level of novice to one who is familiar but not comfortable with the MIG welding techniques. The learning studio’s environment is interactive while encouraging questions and comments at any time. Every participant will have a welding station to practice the MIG welding process. The goal at the end of the studio hour is to feel comfortable with the operation of the welding machine and the MIG welding process.
Additional materials fee of $7 for steel coupons, gas, and filler wire will be added to the total class fee when you register online.
BARN will provide:
- Welding shield or hood
- Welding gloves
- Protective welding jackets or sleeves if desired
- Hand tools
- Welders and welding station
- Practice materials
The following is required from each participant:
? Long sleeve shirt and pants in natural fiber clothing
? Leather closed toed shoes
? To be on time
About the instructor:
Renzo Toglia's welding experience started as a helper in his older brother's steel shop in High School. As a graduate from the U of Arizona he earned a B. S. in Structural Engineering while working each summer welding and fabricating structural steel.
Renzo says, "The study of material properties and the experience in my later years as a ship fitter, fabricator and layout man interspersed between design engineer jobs on off-shore oil drilling rigs, supervising a gold mine operation and designing marine structures, yields my confidence to introduce you to the peek-hole to the world of welding. I look forward to sharing our knowledge."
