About

Open Studio in BARN’s fully-equipped Jewelry and Fine Metals Studio provides BARN members and the jewelry community a collaborative environment to pursue self-directed work, whether it’s to finish projects from classes or to work on independent projects. BARN supplies tools and basic shop supplies. Some metals are available for purchase (please bring cash or check). Ask the studio monitor for assistance.

A trained safety monitor is always on duty.

Skills Card

To be eligible to participate in Open Studio, you must have an up-to-date Skills Card. The Skills Card identifies the techniques and equipment that you have been cleared to work on, either when you completed a Skills Assessment or after you have completed a class. To register for a Jewelry Studio Orientation and Skills Assessment session please see our calendar here.

Social Distancing and Protocols

In order to maintain social distancing in the studio, there are 3 spots available for general studio use and 3 spots available for using the lapidary equipment. You will specify which type when you register. If the session fills, please join the waitlist. If someone cancels, you will be notified via email that a spot has opened up.

  • BARN is practicing safety measures for the health and well-being of all participants, in accordance with state and CDC guidelines. Overall BARN safety policies are here.

Safety in the Studio

To avoid injury, please follow these guidelines:

  • Wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Tie long hair back.
  • Avoid wearing loose clothing, dangling jewelry, scarves, ties, or any item that could get caught in machinery.
  • Wear hearing protection when using noisy equipment.
  • Wear safety glasses and/or a dust mask when using specific equipment.
