About
This opportunity has prerequisites. Please see below.
Do you want to join the team of jewelry monitors? This is your chance. We are starting to train people to become monitors in the Jewelry Studio in hopes of expanding our open studio hours.
We are looking for people who are comfortable working in a jewelry studio and only need to brush up on equipment safety, learn our procedures and/or learn more about a few tools. This is a free class open to BARN members who want to get more studio time and are willing to become active monitors. This 2 day class will be customized to meet the needs of the students, but you must meet the prerequisites.
Prerequisites:
- Be recommended by someone on the steering committee. If you are interested, please contact Karin Luvaas (jewelry.lead@bainbridgebarn.org) or Jody Lyle.
- Have at least 3 months of recent active participation in the Jewelry Studio
- Be an active BARN member.
- Be confident soldering, polishing on the buffer, using the flex shaft and most of the tools in the jewelry studio.
- Be attentive and capable of acting quickly and calmly under pressure.
- Be willing and able to pass a background check and take BARN’s first-aid and youth protection training.
Details:
- Taking this class does not guarantee that you will become a monitor, but it is the first step. Once you have completed the 2 day class, you will return for a testing day (You can sign up for that now). You will be given a practical test and a written test to help us evaluate your skills and knowledge. Once you successfully pass, you can start Shadow monitoring.
- A great way to prepare is to read and take the tests in chapters 4-6 in the book “A Jeweler’s Guide to Apprenticeships” by Nanz Aalund. This will give you a lot of relevant information. You can also ask the open studio monitors if they are willing to let you practice your skills or opening and closing the studio while they supervise. If you need extra help or have any questions, contact us.
- Copies of this book are available for checkout in the Jewelry Studio.
- Perks of being a monitor: full access to the jewelry studio tools and equipment outside of scheduled open studio times!
- If you are interested, but have questions, please contact the Jewelry Studio.
