About

This is an Intermediate to Advanced weaving class.

The workshop Lace Weaves and the Rainbow Connection is an on-loom workshop that is a combination of weaving, presentation, and discussion. During this workshop, we will explore both loom-controlled and weaver-manipulated lace weaves. We will also examine the fundamental building blocks of the three loom-controlled lace weave structures (e.g., Atwater-Bronson, Huck, and Swedish) and how they can be manipulated into new designs and open an unlimited number of possibilities.

You will warp your floor or table loom with one of the threadings in the warping instruction prior to the workshop and weave only on your own loom during the workshop. Each of the threadings will produce a plain weave selvedge. Therefore, floating selvedges are not necessary. Lace weaves traditionally are woven with a one-color warp and with the same yarn used for the weft. In addition to lace weaves, we will explore applying color in lace weaves.

Session 1 - focus on loom-controlled lace weaves

Session 2 - focus on color

Session 3 - focus on weaver-manipulated lace weaves

Loom Reservation:

BARN Fiber Studio has 7 floor looms and 2 table looms (4-harness). To reserve a BARN loom, please contact fiber.programming@bainbridgebarn.org or reserve in the studio. You are welcome to bring your own loom.

The warping instructions will be in the registration confirmation email after you register.

Supplies students will need to provide:

You are encouraged to use materials you already have on hand. The warping instructions for this workshop specify 5/2, 8/2, or 10/2 cotton.

Warping: Below are the setts for three different yarns:

Warp Yarn Sett (ends per inch)

  • 5/2 cotton 16 epi
  • 8/2 cotton 20 epi
  • 10/2 cotton 24 epi
  • Length of warp three yards for table looms, four yards for floor looms (minimum)

Weft/shuttles

  • Number of shuttles - At least one, preferably two weft
  • One same as warp in color and size

Lace weaves are traditionally woven with a weft that matches the warp. To further explore the potential of lace weaves bring at least one weft in a contrast in color and/or size.

Warp Yarn Recommendations:

Light colors – they will produce patterns that will be easier to see

Select a yarn you have enough of so you will also have some to use as weft

Supply list

  • Pen and paper to take notes
  • Scissors
  • Mark the items you bring (e.g., shuttles, scissors, etc.) since it will help identify anything that may stray or get left behind
