About

 Explore more deeply how the manipulation of flame can bring out intended colors, create different colors, and generally produce fun reactions.

You'll venture away from the neutral flame and use either a reducing or oxidizing flame to achieve very different outcomes. Think special effects. You'll also explore how the chemistry in the different colors of glass, when combined, can produce additional color.

Brown can be turned into purple, red into blue, and silver can look just like gold. This class will show you how. Not only are these processes fun to experiment with and use, but knowing when and how to use them is a must-have for your torchworking knowledge bank!

Details

  • Skill Level:  Advanced beginner and intermediate. You should be comfortable forming and shaping beads and applying dots.
  • A short break is included so bring a snack (refrigerator and microwave available on the lower level). You're encouraged to bring a closed drinking container, and hydrate as you work.

Details

  • A $28 materials fee, included in the price of the class, covers everything needed except mandrels.
  • You need to bring pre-dipped mandrels (minimum 20), and are encouraged to bring any tools and colored soft glass rods you're more comfortable working with.

Prerequisites

You need to have had some experience with beadmaking or taken at least one introductory beadmaking class, such as Introduction to Torchwork: Beadmaking.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required in the Glass Studio at all times. Long hair should be tied back.
  • Long sleeves and clothing of 100% cotton is required to prevent burns. 
Instructor
Michele Benson

Michele has a bachelor's degree in studio art from Potsdam State College in New York and a master’s in social work from Portland State University. After many years in child welfare, Michele retired and opened Sandhill Glass Studio where she taught lampworking (torchwork) for more than 10 years until she moved to Washington state. She has taught lampworking (torchwork) at the Oregon Institute of Technology and Klamath Community College, and has written articles for Soft Flex Jewelry Company. Michele is a long-time member of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers and is currently a member of the Glass Dragons.
