About

The avid traveler knows that the tastiest bites don’t always start with a reservation, but instead with a walk through a local market or food hall. In Laos, thousands of street vendors sell traditional Laotian snack foods and desserts. Located at every busy intersection and temple festival, people flock to these stalls to satisfy their cravings for something spicy, savory, sour, and sweet.

Learn how to shape and fill gluten-free dumplings, make red curry paste from scratch, and use a takoyaki pan to make the most delicious coconut pan cakes.

On the Menu

  • Sakoo yat sai (tapioca dumplings stuffed with salted turnips and caramelized pork)
  • Nam Khao (deep-fried red curry jasmine rice salad with fermented pork)
  • Khao nom kok (coconut rice cakes)

Instructor
Soy Dara

Soy was born in a refugee camp in northern Thailand, a member of a Lao family fleeing the conflict in their home country. At the age of 4, she resettled in the United States along with her mother and stayed connected to Lao culture by cooking for community gatherings and Lao Buddhist Temple events. To this day, Soy loves food for the way it brings people together. Soy also teaches cooking classes at The Pantry, a community kitchen in Seattle.
