About

This class has prerequisites. Please see below before you register.

Be your own publisher! We will start with a collaborative project designed for the Print & Book Studio's more sophisticated Chandler & Price platen presses. You will then be guided into setting up your own jobs, locking them in place, positioning, proofing, and running multiple copies (bring your favorite haiku, song lyric, or short quote).

We’ll discuss paper selection, ink, ink mixing, and the option of adding second colors. We’ll also focus on the necessary care and feeding (clean-up!) of the equipment. This is a skills and techniques workshop intended to ready you to work on your own projects during monitored Open Studios.

To further your skills after this class, you may want to register for Letterpress Basics 3 held on Saturday, March 19. This class, Letterpress Basics 2 is the second in a series of 3 classes.

Instructor Bios:

Instructors are Ellie Mathews and Carl Youngmann. Carl began setting type letter by letter in 1960; Ellie combines her experience as a designer with her willingness to explore the techniques of relief printing. Together, they operate The North Press in Port Townsend, where they focus on the production of poetry broadsides with occasional adventures into ephemera, posters, cards, and whimsies. Working as a team, they will share with you their passion for the craft while guiding participants step-by-step toward taking independent command of the process.
