About

This class has prerequisites. Please see below before you register.

Go big! We’ll work on the Print & Book Arts flatbed cylinder press, its largest letterpress. You will set up a simple—or not so simple—job, explore approaches to printing with multiple colors while adding graphics such as linocuts, antique cuts, ornaments, and/or polymer plates (provided).

You’ll become familiar with positioning and registration while getting acquainted with the safe operation of the press. You will also learn its care and feeding, which includes the responsibilities of clean-up. For BARN members, it will lead to the next steps in Letterpress Certification with fob access during monitored Open Studios.

This class, Letterpress Basics 3 is the third in a series of 3 classes.

Details:

  • Prerequisites: Letterpress Basics 1 and Letterpress Basics 2 class or by permission of the instructors. Please log in to your BARN account, click on your profile name and check the link "My event registrations" to ensure you have completed the prerequisites before you register.
  • Please bring a lunch. We have a refrigerator and microwave for your use located on the lower level.

Instructor Bios:

Instructors are Ellie Mathews and Carl Youngmann. Carl began setting type letter by letter in 1960; Ellie combines her experience as a designer with her willingness to explore the techniques of relief printing. Together, they operate The North Press in Port Townsend, where they focus on the production of poetry broadsides with occasional adventures into ephemera, posters, cards, and whimsies. Working as a team, they will share with you their passion for the craft while guiding participants step-by-step toward taking independent command of the process.
