About

Make a bandsaw box from a solid piece of wood, a laminated block, or a log from the woodpile. Whereas most boxes have straight sides and square corners, band saw boxes have virtually no restrictions as to shape. You can make yours oval, heart-shaped, lizard-shaped, or most any shape you want.

At the first session, you will learn about bandsaw box design and construction, and cut your box on the bandsaw, You can purchase wood from BARN or bring your own wood. By the end of the session, your box should be glued up. Finishing may need to be done on your own after the class.

Details:

  • This class is suitable for beginners, but students should be checked out on band saw safety beforehand. Do this by taking Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1. Multiple sessions are listed on the BARN calendar.
  • If you want to buy wood from BARN, bring $10 for a maple block approximately 8 inches by 8 inches by 3 inches. Or you can bring your own wood with that as a general size guide.
  • Before the class, sketch the shape of the box you want. For ideas, search Google Images for "bandsaw boxes."

Instructor: Tom Wilson, who was an Industrial Arts teacher in California for 30 years. Tom assists with woodworking classes at Bainbridge High School and has helped many students build ornate bandsaw boxes.
