About

Learn to make bentwood rings using thin layers of wood called veneer. In this two-afternoon online class, you will complete one ring and wind up with the know-how and materials to make five to 10 more rings on your own.

During the first session, the instructor will discuss the process, explain what woods work well for rings, and  suggest ways you can incorporate patterns into your design. You will begin making your ring by cutting and then steaming/boiling the wood to make it pliable for bending.

You will pick up the process the next day, once the wood has fully dried in place overnight. During this second session, you will glue, sand, and then finish the ring with fast-curing cyanoacrylate (CA) glue, giving you a finished piece that is both lightweight and durable.

The materials fee covers veneers, glue, sanding materials and other disposables. You will be able to pick up your kit at BARN or we will mail or deliver it to you. We will email registrants to work out these details.

You will need to provide the following:

  • Sharp knife to cut veneers (X-Acto or similar precision cutting knife, pocket knife, or sharp kitchen knife)
  • Straight-edge or ruler
  • Surface to cut on safely (piece of wood or craft mat)
  • Microwave and microwavable dish/mug OR stovetop with pot
  • Paper towels (will be used for finishing so cannot be cloth)
  • Handheld drill (corded or cordless) will make the process much easier, but is optional

Instructor bio:

Kevin Kelly is always making things: building nonprofit databases in his day job, turning bowls on the lathe in the evenings, or building new things for around the yard on the weekend. He has been making bentwood rings since 2014, when he finally gave up on his poorly-fitting wedding ring in favor of a homemade one from walnut.
