Build a playable acoustic-electric cigar box guitar in a class that blends traditional lutherie, folk-instrument wisdom, and a bit of whimsy. Cigar box guitars are great fun to make and easy to play.

You will learn:

• What makes a guitar sound like a guitar.
• How to choose or make your own cigar box.
  
• How to shape and fret a neck.
• Where to place a pickup and how to control your tone and volume.
• How to add mojo and personalize your instrument.
• How to add tuners, strings, nut, and bridge and pluck that first note!

Details:

• Open to those 14 years and older who have completed Woodshop Tool Safety 1 and Woodshop Tool Safety 2. If you have not taken these classes, please register for them before you sign up for this class. If you want to work on your instrument during open studio time, please also take our free Orientation to the Woodshop class before this class begins.

• The materials fee covers all basic materials including your choice of cigar box, but no paint or other finish.You may also want to provide your own additional hardware for mojo-enhancing embellishments.

Instructors: Doug Salot and Mo Ellis.

Doug Salot started playing the guitar about 10 years ago and occasionally tries to distract himself by building guitars and ukuleles.He studied instrument building with local luthier Alan Simcoe.

Mo has played guitar off and on for a loooong time and is still trying to figure it out. He built his first instrument, a mountain dulcimer, about 40 years ago, then went on to make a hammered dulcimer and lotsof experimental stringed instruments. Some were playable. All were fun to build.

Please avoid dangling jewelry or loose clothing. Long hair must be tied back. Close-toed shoes are required.
