Learn to make a miniature version of a traditional Coast Salish net-anchor.  This type of anchor has been made and utilized for thousands of years by the First Peoples of the Salish Sea.  A set of these anchors were attached to the bottom edge of the fish nets to weight them down and hold them in place while in the moving waters. 

Ed Carriere is a master weaver, and a carver of canoes, story-poles, paddles, and more.  Ed will bring for students some favorite stones from the shoreline upon which he has lived his whole life, and share the story of how he has been studying artifacts found in Northwest wet-sites, learning to recreate these anchors.  Ed will show you how traditional plant materials were used, and then teach you to make an example of this artifact using his hand-gathered branches and a readily available caning material.  Melinda West, one of Ed’s long time students, will assist Ed. Melinda will provide materials for adapting this project to make a keepsake necklace.  Students will come home from this day of cultural learning with a minimum of two examples to help them remember the techniques learned.

Materials Fee of $40 Per Student at the beginning of class. Please bring cash or check made out to BARN.

Please feel free to bring a bag lunch. BARN has a refrigerator you may store your lunch in.
