About

Abstract

Make a journal cover, then make a drawstring backpack and a pencil pouch to take your journal wherever you go

About this class

First make a beautiful journal cover for a Composition Notebook. Then make a clever zipper pouch for all your pens and pencils. And then make a drawstring backpack to carry your journal and zip pouch so that you can use them anywhere you go! Through these projects, you’ll learn or improve sewing in a straight line—by the end of the third session you’ll feel like a pro!  Additionally, the journal cover will let you explore decorative stitches and embellishing with trim. The three-pocket zipper pouch will teach you to sew in a zipper. And when you make the backpack, you’ll learn to set in grommets, make a buttonhole, and sew on a button. As a bonus, you’ll be certified to use BARN’s sewing machines so you can jump in quickly to future youth sewing classes at BARN!

Materials

The fee covers all materials needed for all three projects:

  • Fabric
  • Thread
  • Cording

Instructor:

Dawna Ellis began sewing over 50 years ago as a young Girl Scout. Nurturing those skills led her to become a costume designer and fabricator in the theatrical industry for 30 years. That experience and exposure to working with textiles in often unconventional ways solidified her love of textiles and their endless possibilities. Dawna continues to explore techniques to develop and hone her skills, is an avid quilter, and lives in Poulsbo with her husband and two dogs.
