About

In a joint project of BARN woodworkers and Bainbridge Island Rowing, volunteers will be refinishing the historic Quinault rowing shell for display in the Stan Pocock Legacy Rowing Center being built at Waterfront Park on Bainbridge.

The eight-rower cedar shell, 61 feet long, will be displayed in the central hallway of the rowing center. Stan Pocock, whose boats were featured in the book "Boys on the Boat," lelieved the shell was built around 1949 as a "bat boart," with a double hull to add strength and durability for the Navy's rowing program. But this boat didn't go to the Navy; it went to the University of Washngton.

The repair work primarily involves sanding, scraping and refinishing. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Wayne Chang at wwchang@mac.com or Mike Gearheard at mfgearheard@gmail.com.
