About
In this two sessions class, students will work with small-scale sculptural forms and be guided to enhance them with pattern, texture and color that has meaning and personal relevance.
The course will focus on developing quick, effective shapes using the bandsaw, and other shop tools including for qualified turners, the lathe*, various carving tools and sanding equipment. These forms will serve as canvases for surface embellishment techniques including relief and textural carving using hand and rotary tools, wood burning/branding and the use of acrylic and milk paints.
These smaller scale pieces can be stand alone, or an experimental maquette to later develop into larger indoor or outdoor sculpture. The principles of up scaling and appropriate choice of design and materials for outdoors will be covered in class.
*While use of the wood lathes is not required for this class, students who wish to use BARN's lathes to turn bowls or hollow forms must have taken at least one bowl-turning class at BARN, or schedule a skill-review session with a BARN turning instructor. Please call Jamie Straw at (360) 551-0233 for questions or to schedule a session.
There will be an additional Materials Fee of $60 added when you register.
Those who prefer to go straight into surface embellishment techniques are welcome to bring pre-turned and/or carved objects.
