Join us for three Tuesday mornings of sewing the Pilvi Coat from Lotta Jansdotter. This is a loose-fitting unstructured/unlined raglan coat that you can make to waist-length or knee-length or somewhere in-between.
The pattern is simple, but the directions are limited. The benefit of sewing together is that we can figure it out together. This pattern is suitable for adventurous beginners and more experienced sewists can enjoy this make too.
You can also hack this coat pattern to include a buttonhole placket with bound buttonholes. During this sew-along, one of our members, Jackie Kelly, is generously offering to demonstrate how she has made this hack and how you can add this useful skill to your toolbox. Don’t miss it!
The pattern includes five sizes. Together we can work to find the best size and make adjustments. Depending on the look you want you can make this coat in almost anything from a wool coating, a mid-weight denim, a light linen, or something in-between.
Please note that this is a sew-along, not a class, and instruction isn’t planned for this activity. We hope sewists of all levels will be joining us, so you will be able to ask questions, but you will not be taken through the project step-by-step.
Supplies students should bring:
- Your own copy of the Pilvi Coat Pattern from the book Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style: Key Pieces to Sew + Accessories, Styling, and Inspiration (check the envelope in the back of the book and page 136). This book is available new from Amazon and other sellers, but you can also find it used from other sources.
- Tissue paper and tracing supplies for tracing the pattern pieces from the book. The Fiber Studio has some you can use.
- Fabric, thread, and other supplies required to complete the coat in the size of your choice. The Fiber Studio does have some fabric and thread available for your purchase.
- Tools: rotary cutters and rulers, marking tools, scissors, pins, and needles. Your are welcome to use BARN’s tools or to bring your own.
- Sign up to use one of BARN’s sewing machines (prerequisite: Learn How to Use the Fiber Studio Sewing Machines) or bring your own.
- Non-Members if you would like to use one of BARN's machines please email fiber.programming@bainbridgebarn.org

The sew-along officially starts at 9am and ends at 1pm, but if your fob has been activated, you can come earlier and stay as long as you like.
