Shellac Plate printmaking is a low-tech and versatile technique for creating etching-like intaglio prints as well as subtly textured collographs. Through demos and lots of hands-on work we will create and print plates using both shellac and water-based polyurethane on an illustration board matrix. Students will be encouraged to experiment with the wide range of effects that can be achieved with shellac plates to express their own visual ideas and aesthetic. In consideration of chemical sensitivities, pre-made shellac plates will be supplied; only water-based polyurethane will be used in liquid form during the workshop. Some printmaking experience helpful but not required.

Instructor:

After many years as a graphic designer, Dawn Endean began studying printmaking in 2009 at Seattle’s Pratt Fine Arts Center. She has been working seriously as a printmaker since the fall of 2010 and as an instructor at Pratt since 2015. Endean is a member of Seattle’s Shift Gallery. Her other Seattle exhibitions have included the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, the Tashiro Kaplan Gallery, the Columbia City Gallery and Click Design. She has shown as well at the Northwind Arts Center in Port Townsend, Mighty Tieton in Tieton, Washington, Gallery 25 in Fresno, California and the Turner Print Museum in Sacramento, California.
