In this 2-day, online class students will learn safe set-up of torches, soldering stations, flux use and application techniques necessary for successful home soldering. Focusing on the 3 most popular torch styles for at home use, Blazer - GT8000, Orca Torch, and Smith Little with disposable propane tanks will be demonstrated. This class will demonstrate the advantages and draw-backs of using each torch for soldering applications.

Soldering Practice Exercises from A Jeweler’s Guide to Apprenticeships will be the focus for gaining torch control skills.  

Class Format:
Class is designed in two segments. Instruction will be given from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. Then there will be a break so you can practice and record video with your cell phone of your soldering. Class will reconvene at 4:30 for a question and answer period.  

Prerequisites:

  • To gain the best results from this class students must be able to video their soldering practice with their cellphone, upload the video to their laptop or desktop computer and then Screen Share their video on Zoom so the instructor can coach and troubleshoot.
  • Students must have a safe soldering station established in their home to participate in class practice, however if students wish to take this class to just observe and learn by taking notes, that is also acceptable.

Safe Soldering Station @Home Tool List students should have at home:

  • 1 - Solderite Board, 12" X 12" (available at Rio Grande Jewelry Supply order # 502-052)
  • 1 - Hard Charcoal block (available at Rio Grande Jewelry Supply order # 502-027)
  • 1set - Soldering Tweezers (available at Rio Grande Jewelry Supply order # 115-781)
  • 1 - Wire Snips (available at Rio Grande Jewelry Supply order # 111-274)

Check at a Thrift store, at Walmart, or a Cook's Mart for these additional items:

  • 1 - Baker's Aluminum, 1/2 cake pan, 18" X 13"
  • 1 - Quench Bowl in Stainless steel, Aluminum, or Pyrex
  • 1 - Pyrex or Corning ware (2cup sized heat-able glass with lid) measuring cup or sauce pan for "Pickle"

From the household pantry: these items will be used to make "Pickle"

  • 1-cup water
  • 1-cup Vinegar
  • 2tbs Salt

Details:

  • Registration for this class will close on Sunday, May 23rd at 10:00am.
  • Material Kits include copper, brass, flux, and solder to complete these exercises will be mailed to you. Kits are $60 with shipping and is included in the price of tuition. Please verify your mailing address when registering.
  • This class will be taught via the Zoom video conferencing program. For a great video on how to use Zoom, watch this tutorial.

Instructor Bio:

Nanz Aalund’s wide ranging career as an award-winning jewelry designer, goldsmith, and educator, began with a high school jewelry class. After serving as a fine jewelry designer, production director, and marketing consultant for Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Tiffany & Co., Aalund taught jewelry and metals classes at the University of Washington and at the Art Institute in Seattle. Earning a Masters of Fine Art (MFA/Metals) and a Masters of Education/College and Technical Teaching Curriculum. (CTTC) She authored the 40 biographies for the book, Masters Gold, published by Lark Books in 2009 and served as technical author and associate editor for Art Jewelry Magazine. Nanz’s most recent publication, “ A Jeweler’s Guide to Apprenticeship” for MJSA, received an Excel Award from AM&P in 2018.
