The ‘Paste Paper’ method of decorating paper dates back to the end of the 1600’s. It was a happy accident that quickly gained popularity among bookbinders, and has been a favorite form of serious, yet playful, paper decoration ever since.  If you bind books, do collage, or other paper-based crafts, Paste Paper  is definitely a technique you’ll want to add to your tool kit.

In Part I (building skills) of this two-part BARN workshop, you will become familiar with the Paste Paper process, hear a little history, learn to use a variety of tools to create designs, play with different pigments and adhesives, and turn out a storehouse of Paste Paper sheets for your future use. We’ll leave our creations to dry for a few days while pondering the Paste Paper project(s) that we’ll create in Part II on Sunday.

In Part II (reaping rewards) we will bring your Paste Papers to life. We’ll turn faded boxes into fascinating keepsakes; make dust-jackets or book covers that sing; create note cards the recipients will want to frame; and so on.

The Take Away:  You will leave with instructions for doing Paste Paper at home, all the items you have created, and a portfolio for storing your paste papers.

Instructor Susan Callan (a long-time enthusiastic student-and-teacher of Book Arts), will bring many examples of functional items she has made from, or embellished with Paste Paper to inspire your thinking about your Paste Paper Project.
