About
If you're a high school student interested in robotics, this program is for you!
Work alongside a professional engineer with a background in machine design as you tackle a moderately complex project: designing and building an advanced shooter system that can be installed on Bainbridge High School's Spartronics HELIOS robot before the Girls Generation 2017 event in the fall.
The instructor and other mentors will guide you through the design and fabrication process while explaining the reasons for and consequences of the things that take place. You will be able to experience the robot design-and-build process without the stress of the official competition season. You will also build your skills in making parts and assemblies typically used in FIRST robots, and you will learn more about systems engineering.
Students will use several facilities in BARN's new center, including the Electronics & Technical Arts Studio and the metal machining and sheet metal shops within the Metal Arts Studio.
Details:
- Open to eighth grade graduates and above who have completed at least Algebra 1. Students from Bainbridge Island and beyond Bainbridge are welcome.
- Because this program occurs during the school summer vacation, 100 percent attendance is not required. However, students who miss sessions will need to make their own arrangements to find out what they missed.
- No class on July 1 because of the Rotary Auction that day or on July 15. Saturday, July 22. The schedule may be changed to accommodate the majority of participants.
- A $20 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first session.
- Students must bring a scientific calculator or a smart phone with a calculator feature equivalent to that in an iPhone 6,. At times, students will also need to bring materials for developing sketches: paper, pencils, erasers, scales, triangles and a compass.
- BARN will supply two laptops with Autodesk Fusion 360 installed, but students are encouraged to bring their own laptops with the program installed, for use in sketching and drawing using CAD.
Instructor: Paul G. Vibrans P.E., is the lead instructor. He is a naval architect, marine engineer and electrical engineer with 45 years of diverse engineering experience, from gorilla doors to custom yachts to elevators. Other mentors of Bainbridge High School's robotics team will also help guide this program.
