About

Combine crafting with activism and you've got craftivism - the use of crafts to make positive changes in your community. In this class, we will take a slow-stitch approach to craftivism, using skills like hand sewing, embroidery, and knitting to create items with positive messages to share around BARN.

Details

  • For students ages 12-16.
  • Skill Level: Beginner
  • Registration closes Monday, July 3.
  • A materials fee of $10 is included in the price of the class and covers all materials.

Project

This class will create a few small projects: a hand-stitched pronouns name tag, a hand-embroidered positivity sign, and a knit or crocheted yarn bomb that we will deploy somewhere around BARN!

Class Policies

  • If you have any questions, please email BARN Youth Program Coordinator, Sarah Jones at SarahJ@BainbridgeBARN.org.
Instructor
Betsy Hagestedt

Betsy has been working with fiber since she was in elementary school, having learned to sew and knit from her mom. As an anthropologist, she uses her fiber practice as a means of connecting with people from other cultures, embracing the universal nature of fiber arts. Knitting gradually became her specialization due to its portability as she began to travel around the world. You can see some of her fiber experiments on her Instagram feed at behestknits. Since starting at BARN she has been learning as many new skills as possible. She is highly involved in torchworking in the Glass Studio, and has started dabbling with welding and woodturning.
