About

Got some worn-out T-shirts? Don’t give them to the thrift shop or drop them in the trash. Transform them into something beautiful and useful! You can make a set of gorgeous placemats, a big tote bag, or a cushy rug on a simple frame loom. A frame loom is a simple wood rectangle with pegs on the top and bottom. One manufacturer calls them “Friendly Looms” because they’re so easy to use.

We’ll start by cutting your T-shirts into continuous strips, and then we’ll do a test project on a small loom warped with twine to learn the technique and discover how colors combine—you may be surprised!.

For your next project, we’ll take what we’ve learned to plan your next project, on a bigger frame loom or in pieces on a small loom. In this class, we’ll focus on weaving with your old T-shirts and other T-shirt-style knits with kitchen twine as the warp, but we’ll also see examples of frame-loom weaving using old woven garments and fabrics, too, with either twine or fabric wrap.

You’ll learn how to cut your T-shirts, using even the small pieces—how to plan your project, and how to finish, depending on what you’re making.

Students should bring old T-shirts and other knit garments that can be cut up to share with everyone in the class—the more colors the better! T-shirts should be clean, but old stains and signs of wear are OK. Start collecting now, and don’t forget to ask everyone in your family. BARN will also have extra materials available to supplement what students bring.
