About

Do you have scraps from leftover fabric or garments that are too special to discard? In this workshop, you will design and hand-stitch creative samples that can become the basis for larger pieces of unique cloth. The primary focus will be on creating textural surface designs, hand-stitching, and building your own design skills, possibly finding a new love in the way you work, and play, with textiles.

The options for using the samples are unlimited and will challenge your imagination! They make spectacular handbags, vests, placemats, framed art, or beautiful decorative additions to jackets and many other garments – especially older treasured pieces from your wardrobe. The instructor will provide examples for “show and tell” and students may optionally bring their own to share with the group.

Details:

  • Skill Level: Beginning

  • Bring a bag lunch and beverage. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.

  • The instructor will provide an assortment of fabric scraps and threads from her collection for use by the group.

Details

Students need to bring:

  • Basic sewing kit, including fabric scissors, straight pins, and quilting ruler (or use BARN supplies).
  • Coordinated variety of fabric scraps that are meaningful to you, along with larger solid color background pieces.
  • Trims, laces, vintage elements, beads, buttons, or other treasures for embellishments.
  • A variety of hand-stitching threads to play with, i.e. Pearl Cotton, Sashiko thread and/or anything you like to work or want to experiment with (BARN has a limited supply of threads).
  • Needles with different sized eyes to fit your threads.
  • Sketch notebook, pen, and colored pencils (if desired).

Project

You will create a piece of fabric by re-using scraps and learning to embellish your fabric.
