Turning a Hardwood Platter
Add to your woodturning skills by creating a platter with a graceful ogee edge.
Details
- The class focuses on paying careful attention to the relationship between the rim, the base, and the sweeping S-curve. The shape transforms the wood and establishes the character of the platter.
- The goal is to leave this class with the skills and confidence to create nicely proportioned platters and the knowledge of how thoughtful shaping can elevate a simple turned form.
- The platter in the picture has an ogee edge with carved details, inspiration for how you may wish to finish your own platters. Embellishing the edge is not part of this class, but the instructor will share her techniques for adding texture and color in The Modern Chisel: Intro to Power Carving.
Prerequisites
- Intro to Woodturning and Intro to Bowl Turning
- If you have not taken both of the classes listed, you must demonstrate equivalent lathe safety and turning skills during a private skills review that you can arrange by emailing Jamie Straw at wood.turning@bainbridgebarn.org at least seven days before this class.
Materials
- A $11 materials fee, included in the class price, covers everything needed.
Class Policies
- Ages 14 and up are welcome.
- Wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid loose-fitting clothing and jewelry. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.
